I play zetter and I try to pick stages that aren't big, have low platforms so I can follow up on them easily and even upsmash them from underneath, so I would be okay with facing a Fleet there. Plus you can recover through the bottom of the stage which can be fun.

As I rise the ranks, I come across new playstyles that I don't know how to counter. I just played against two completely seperate clairens in ranked that managed to chaingrab me to the edge of the map and then fsmash the ledge a bunch of times until I died. I wish I could show a replay, but all of my replays are corrupt for some reason. I was 3 stocked by both of these players. They, again, just chaingrabbed me to the edge and threw me off the stage then fsmashed the ledge. How do I counter this? I DId away and in and it doesnt stop the chaingrab. I tried DIing the fsmash at ledge away which seems to kill me faster because maypul can't reach the ledge and DIing in just means the clairen has to fsmash me at the ledge a few more times. The fsmash sends me so far I can't reach the wall so I can walljump and recover that way.

I see what I was doing wrong now. Running a certain distance and then shielding (quickly) puts you in the skidding animation which retains some of your movement momentum from whichever direction you started moving. This is regardless of what direction you were facing when you start shielding. So if you do that while going off the edge your momentum carries you off stage in the direction to auto grab the ledge.

I was probably not shielding fast enough or having the required run direction. (I also changed shielding to a bumper button)

The tutorials must be for people who are new too. The videos on their official youtube call moves things like "tilt". I come from traditional fighting games, are tilts normals or specials? And which normal? Tilt is not terminology they use in the new player guide either so it's not even consistent. There are many weird design decisions in this game too that I can only think come from Smash, because a new game would never do anything like that. Like having triangle (on a PS pad) being the default jump button instead of X. Or the character select screen needing you to awkwardly move a cursor with the analog instead of snapping to the grid like any fighting game, I swear I still don't know exactly which buttons to press to select mine and my opponent's character in training mode. Back to terminology, I see people talking about things like neutral air. Neutral air what? Normal? Special? I'm sure all this is second nature to Smashers but I'm having a harder time than Sajam and I haven't even gone online yet, only arcade mode. It is fun though.

again, it's not normal for a game to have 50% silver players. if this happens something is wrong. look up ranked distributions for any game it will never be 50% for silver or whatever the silver equivalent is. it wont even be close.

It's an indie game and a smash one at that, if a person is bad at the game to begin with they won't stick around and this game was mainly aimed at melee/PM people. Most of the community isn't artist and most of the ones that are sparsely do any art. With R1, pre workshop, no ledge, shield, or grab filtered out majority of smash casuals cause it was learn parry or just don't get hit at all.

Half of the art is long lost in twitter cause that site has ass navigation for art and while hashtags exist no normal person really uses them meaning they don't end up anywhere else unless someone else knows they exist and then uploads them. While Rivals 2 is more open to casuals, you already cam already assume things aren't gonna last forever even if the game does well, workshop did amazing for rivals but didn't exactly bring much new art even after DE came and a good few of those characters were some high sprite quality ones or even just stylish. With Panther lover leaving and not listing alts, the Rivals Clairen art and Clairen porn numbers are about to stagnate once more. Mostly means I'm gonna have to hope Bug is driven enough to keep up with those models, custom outfits and more of the one animation: https://files.catbox.moe/0ea886.mp4

Most of the people complaining about Clairen's tipper are complaining about being on the receiving end of it, both the stun and how "lenient" the tipper hitbox is. I've personally said (and people have agreed in conversation) that I'd be in favor of her tipper being more precise and also the stun being lowered, in exchange for more impactful buffs in other areas. That way complainers have less to complain about, and Clairen players aren't just shafted to appease complainers, but also they are buffed in return.

Seeing the tweet about Dan himself not being a fan of being on the receiving end of Clairen tippers is worrisome, considering I don't think she's really that strong or needing of a nerf.

This is half the crowd, the others consider it less useful or have hit the mark where they can't land it often or, I shit you not, consider that it gives the other player 'years to properly tech/Di' away from it. There are even points where you can land it for the spike and die cause you went down a tiny bit too fast meaning you die before them The stun being as is what makes it the most useful set up tool as well as a chase If you see her hitboxes that shit is wide as hell and honestly harder to miss most of the time.; You also have the camp of both groups of new players feeling neutral special or side special being useless to bad moves for clairen. The only character you will find minimal complaints on the side that plays is Kragg.

Dan is pretty open about not enjoying being on the receiving end of most shit, he's done it for Kragg on a few occasions. I personally apparently played in a way that made someone not like me playing clairen at all. I can't even remember what I did.

At the 3 second mark you can clearly see that you burned your double jump. There is the little white circle effect. Whether or not you did it on purpose is another story, but that happens a lot to people when you try to get out of combos.

To survive in that situation, I would say you'd have to be hyper aware of the fact that you burned your jump. Most people die from that because they realize too late, but if you noticed earlier you might have been able to recover by going high instead up for ledge.

Chain grabbing is fine and good, and there is also some counter play to it.

If you remove wall jumping after side b or up b, I think the game would play a lot more like Melee and recoveries wouldn't be nearly as free as they currently are. This could be a good change, but the identity of Rivals 1 was a lack of ledges and recovering via wall jumps, so this probably will never get removed. As further evidence that it will never be changed: the stages are all just wall stages except Air Armada. Even the ice stage is walls, they're just shitty.

CC is fine and you need to adapt.

Why would you think that I wouldn't like hearing that? Shields are also way too strong, they don't shrink, and there is no shield poke. Additionally, and this is a point you made that I agreed with and that also deals with recovery, side B to wall jump is in this game, making the already god tier recoveries even better, but I don't think this is going to change due to the nature of Rivals 1 and the structure of every stage in the game. These are the reasons that the game doesn't feel like Melee.

In my experience, Orcane can't deal with pressure too well. He has to retreat and do well spaced back airs and forward tilts, but even those have lag. He's definitely good in the right hands, but he's not OP and doesn't have an answer to everything. If you're dying to back throw you have to DI straight up.

Yeah I don't play Lox so I cant help you much but all I can suggest is well spaced aerials. As a big boy you'll get shield grabbed like crazy if you aren't careful with your aerials, and even then you're so big its easier to get grabbed than other characters. And damn, you're dying to forward throw at 80%? What stage? Maybe forward throw gets a buff when Orcane is standing in a puddle or something

Only reason there isn't a Rivals mod for it because it's mostly just OC mods, Mugen bullshit, or [Smash thing but i redesigned it for Rivals].
and for fuck sakes, there's a lot of Pokemon mods, but there's some other popular choices that hasn't even got one in Rivals yet. Does that mean it's worthless? No.

I partially agree with this. Grabs are fine, but shields are indeed too powerful, recoveries are indeed too good, blast zones are indeed too large, playing campy is indeed too rewarding, and gimmicks are indeed very gimmicky. I dread what this game will become with even more gimmicks in it as they add more characters.

I'm interested in learning what the abyss is since rivals 1 keeps it real ambiguous on it's goals, what it is, and where it went by the time of Clairen's future. The one workshop adventure map also adds a slight bit to it's story as the looks of the enemies there look like it's half attempt at more than shadow doppelgangers and Rivals 2 has it using the same more prominent aesthetic. I don't think it makes many if any notable appearances in Dungeons either as far as I know. As far as Rivals 1 was concerned, it showed up, fucked with everyone, tried to rot the world and then goes on to take a nap after losing since they weren't able to actually kill it. The few shots of chapter 1 for R2 has them in caverns meaning they are looking for it again but I'm still not sure what it's gonna do or what the plan for it is.

It's not that, they were made after the story was made and then remained unadded because they weren't directly part of any faction.

Ranno is a swap pacifist who seems to live mostly away from everyone.
Elatus is pretty much the same being a loner on some ice area far from the world.
Absa is also in this same category of off somewhere where nobody lives, knows about or can reach, based on their profiles and stages.

Compared to the main cast who all either live life as protectors or heads to well populated areas till Zetter tries to genocide the water area and Kragg gets tricked into beating the dogshit out of Bradshaw, those 3 were so disconnected because their areas were basically too far to be affected by the Abyss' starting assault.

Ranno is the one ironical who is just what his original trailer advertise and just a fighter out in the swamp essentially so he was just out of the loop/uninvoled like said. Why he made it into 2 is probably because Marc loves ranno the most

Absa is part of the air Alliance, not the Air armada as she is of the the many air citizens who can't fly, the armada are the ones directly declaring war on the fire nation

She made the storms because the mountain had no defenses over all and after the fire it was made boldly clear that non fliers are on their own so she made the defenses because there is nothing else to keep them safe from general attacks from anyone because they aren't involved with the war but Zetter has an active history of attacking people with association. The storms are a precaution to be out of all sides because the armada is not an ally anymore.

She honed the marital arts because she feels the storms may fail one day and felt the need for a back up plan. The storms themselves keep the mountain from being found in general

Rivals 1 says the air aramada was fucking over the water lands as well by messing with trade and stealing shit and Wrastor and Bradshaw also end up aggressing Kragg's wall. During the events of the Rivals 1 Zetter comes back from taking out an air fleet while Fors is away before his father is killed and Fors is driven out, it is only after the abyss interfears in the form of orcane that he goes to destroy the harbor before realizing he was tricked, fors was doing espionage during the time he came back and ends up meeting maypul when she gets back from her own side story.

The Air armada is ironically the one doing most aggression even if the lost to fire as Wrastor leads the theft of the water trade, unprompted goes down to the wall and they were previously attacking Fire the day before.

Absa, isn't part of any of this, none of the alliance are as they don't side with the armada and want to part in the war. The game never actually details too much of the why Fire does the original forest fire but during the events of each story it's not indicated that they are still fighting them, just the armada. It's kinda only Absa's story that brings up that they even did it The war is currently, or was at the time, set for Fire vs Armada rather than actually air because not all of air sided with them. The reason the armada exist is because they disagree with the elders on being peaceful post the forest fire.

Absa's story isn't brought up in game to begin with, it's there for world building to explain who she is and her stage. Ranno literally has no adapted story and Hodan's addition also has his lore says he trains Zetter and Fors at some point and taught harmony but it was forgotten.

The story is about the Abyss, the war is secondary to third after fire story in general since even their story is more bout Loxo taking over than any of their fight with air.

A spin-off's job is to promote an IP. For a fighting game that's supposed to be anime arena fighter pretending to be Tekken, it's doing fucking awful.
How is it not doing Mario Party or Ultimate Storm numbers? Why is it doing worse than fucking modern Kusoge Fighter? Even Guilty QUEER fucking outsold Pokken.

Other than that most characters are fine where they're at. Clarien needs tippers to kill at early percents and she's not always going to get them, fleet is polarizing but she was designed to be polarizing, Maypul's bait and punish and tech chase game is balanced by her horrific recovery, Zetter's pressure really isn't that ridiculous once you start using defensive mechanics, etc.
I will say that Wrastor is going to need some type of rework sooner or later but I wouldn't expect that with the first patch

The idea was bad the moment they first released it and still called it open beta, I was one of the people doing the beta & alpha and it was clear the economy was going to go to shit since it was too easy to get things in a freemium game and upon the wait they only made it worse with time and then used the band aid fix of add more character that people remember and has nostalgia for.

Hbox has a special pallet for it if I recall, one thing they said before was that during the weeks there would be a few other chances to get the pallet in case people couldn't attend the tournament during this week. Her Fsmash hitbox covers the sword worse than Roy's Fsmash in Melee, come on. The rest of her moves are give or take, but Fsmash definitely needs more range. Also making Up B and Side B less shit would be nice.

I'm talking this part, right here, that has no go damn hitbox. You're also not taking into account stages, in which the vertical hitbox doesn't matter as much because the platforms are very high relative to characters. Roy on PS2, Yoshi's and FoD covers platforms with his Fsmash more than Clairen on any stage in Rivals 2. Yes it's with a shit tipper but it's a point to consider.

No, anyplace with a red hitbox in those images will always make the hit a sourspot. The opponent has to touch a blue hitbox and NOT a red hitbox for a tipper to register. The red zones effectively carve out big holes in the blue wherever it is. What's left for blue are the tips of the sword.

Have you seen some of the moves in this game? Plenty of Wrastor's moves are the size of his character model but no one complains. Besides that, I mostly want better visual clarity. I enjoy playing enough to know I want no hold on who I play and when unlike you.

Best moves I learned against him was going for low effort push off, his Ai waste jump sometimes so if you can keep him from landing with neutral B or side smash he will passively fail to come back. The only issue is if he goes for ledge with one of his clone throws.

Go play against the Ai for a bit then, don't jump in blind and then complain that you didn't know what you were doing.

The game has a few vids since tutorials aren't in yet that can help you learn characters, some other people have tech videos for you. Try a bit of arcade or some local vs a bot and work you way up for consistent wins, hit training to perfect or at least learn some movement. Make an effort before complaining.

Melee has some good lessons to learn from but I hope it doesn't become too much like Melee. For me, it's shields and recoveries. Maybe sweet spots are part of it, maybe wall jumps are part of it those are never going away though, every stage is built for wall jumps, maybe aerial dodge not putting you in free fall is part of it, maybe side B -> wall jump is part of it, maybe stages are too big, I don't know.

All I know is that for some reason in this game, recoveries and being off the level (at the "disadvantage") are too powerful in this game.

Sweetspots are really just the breaking point if you ask me. The main thing being, even if you eat their double jump, their airdodge, and all they have left is their Up B, you will miss so many edgeguards even then just because a ton of Up Bs stall in the air for a while after reaching the apex of their height on top of the fact that so many of them go high as hell. This sort of thing would make sense for much more limited recoveries. It does not make sense on Ranno who has billions of mixups with bubble and can somewhat angle his Up B and use the descending portions in all sorts of ways.

This has got to be one of the weirdest attacks in platfighter history in terms of how it functions. Normally when you press dair you expect a pretty standard move that sends the opponent down someway whether it's a spike or some kind of thing that bounces the opponent of the ground. Meanwhile this shit sends them horizontally in the opposite direction you hit them and then there's a secret semi-spike(?) hitbox during the last few frames.

Maypul's seedless recovery is very deceptively good lmao. I know this may be hard to believe but trust me no character in this game has a particularly bad recovery except Zetter, and he can do a lot with just down b mixups.

Fors up-b not clinging to ledge also makes his recovery kind of shit, but he can unleash eldritch horrors with smoke and clones

Sometimes I'm embarassed to show my Leopard Orcane skin cuz I'm still bad at the game.
