Vanilla is the biggest time sink out of any MMORPG. Due to it's outdated design, you don't really have a lot of things to do, but spending time online allows you to gain an advantage. In Vanilla, time is the biggest advantage you can get over other players.
The leveling is slow, so people who cannot afford to be online for 16 hours a day level slower. The professions require time and resources to level, naturally people who cannot spend all day fall behind. The PvP is a time-gated grind due to the decay system that literally forces you to exploit, cheat and spend every waking moment of your day grinding so you get that sweet rank 14 and claim superiority over the filthy casuals
Now, who are the people that benefit from this? That's right, losers. People who have been playing the same dogshit version of the game for over 16 years. People who hate retail because they cannot stand still and press Heroic Strike and Bloodthirst. People who call themselves "purists" are people who refuse to change, people who can never leave their comfort zone aka losers. These are 30-50 year old men who do not work and whose only enjoyment in life is to spend 12+ hours a day repeating the same grinds, doing the same bullshit for 16+ years literally every few months once the next cashgrab Vanilla realm opens
This is why Wrath is the biggest thorn in their sight. Seeing people login for a few hours, clearing the raids, doing some heroics, farming some herbs and logging out enrages them. They cannot get the same advantage in modern games as they can in shitnilla because they are online all day
Whenever you see a subhuman talking about Vanilla pservers, remember you're talking to a 40 year old man who never stopped being 13 and hates everything
