SF4 might just be the most "I didn't play the game" game that is talked about ever.
People forget that this was a lot of people's first Street Fighter. And another thing people forget even more, is that it is common in competitive games for there to be certain things that are just too unreliable to be touched.
I don't actually dicksuck Clayton (haven't watched him in like a year), but he's one of the few people I've seen talk about this. And I only bring him up so that retards can't say "omg skill issue! only unskilled people would criticize this".
But 1 frame links were not "normal" they were not "common", they were not what EVERYBODY did. Neither were fucking 2 frame links.
SF4 wasn't some uniquely difficult high skilled fighter, I'm pretty sure compared to anime fighters and every other fighter still, it was fucking braindead. Not to mention that I ALSO heard Daigo talk about this in a past video, but it's a completely unskilled game in the respect of actual gameplay, Daigo talked about people who would just sit in the practice room and were only good because they grinded combos. But who were garbage at neutral and that's why so many SF4 pros failed at 5. He also said that SF4 wasn't actually LIKE past street fighters despite its overwhelming association with it.
I genuinely despise the SF4 dick riding so much. It's such a blatantly poorly made game with very little thought put into 90% of its mechanics in so many ways but people try to pretend it was some bastion of fighting game design, and it takes on the dark souls aura of pretending that because its "hard" (or rather perceived as such) that it's good.

I don't think there's much wrong with sf4 as a system fighter. The reason why the game suck balls is because 10-15 chars never play one sec of neutral, throw random safe shit until they get one KD and put you in a 8-way guess vortex. And they're all S or A tier.

Not really, the frame data emphasis compared to anime fighters already put it in a league above in terms of research. -sign- and by extension xrd had some really tight execution shit, but as a whole? sf4 was harder to get into and be decent right off the bat. Not to mention, the game was degenerate, but still a lot less degenerate than bb or gg. Also not to mention the competition always was harder in sf.

Fuck off frame data wasn't a thing in SFIV I hate this frame data meme, and inb4 you say "there was frame data you just couldn't see it!" YES exactly, that was the fucking point. Clayton talked about this too, the games weren't centered around frame data before 5. It's not the same, they weren't played that way. SF4 wasn't thought of that way, nor was it analyzed that way.
Sagat wasn't broken on release because of frame data, but because he did stupid damage, stun, and his dragon punch was insane.
Even Elana, had frame data that literally didn't work and made some of her combos awkward, but she was broken due to stupidly long buttons, disjoints etc.
Nobody was calling characters broken for "having X plus frames" etc. The games were understood far more simply before then.
You can even argue that SF4 was the most casual Street Fighter before 6 considering that it shouldn't have sold the most if it was REALLY that hard

It is true that there is less emphasis on frame data in 4 than say V, but by the time we got to ultra you had to know a decent amount. You had to know your blockstrings, punishable normals, etc. Incomparable to anime slop where gatling systems and whiff cancels make this knowledge useless. This is not debatable sorry.

When you get people looking back and making fun of how deejay was designed, remember that the game was not created for the intent of making capcom money through esports. The great esportsification happened closer to the end of the game's life, and before that all tournaments were done by the people for the people.

Yes you can? You can just refer to how the game was talked about? How many times can you count casters talking about frame advantage in an SF5 tourney vs SF4? How did people talk about string characters verses weak ones? Did they emphasize certain buttons? Or rather damage? Or mechanics?

When I watch SF4 videos and look back at how people talk about the way Elena is broken, they talk about her Super giving free Healing, or her slide going underneath fireballs, they dont even remotely talk about frame data or advantage, and even then, I've literally seen somebody mention that her fucking normals don't even function properly, and some combos straight up don't work on her.

You don't fucking need a time machine for any of this shit, you can just make references to collective perception, and then if somebody has a counter example or counter reference they bring it up.

The Drive system is genuinely engaging even if the mechanics that use it are or have very retarded aspects to them.
The characters all have very fleshed out and complete movesets that feel a lot better to play.
The mandatory stupid comeback mechanic is less of a comeback mechanic and doesn't impact the neutral nearly as much.
Doesn't feel like weird janky ass on a fundamental level like SF4/5.

How do you explain the fact that Clayton literally says that Frame Data wasn't that big of a thing in 2D fighters until 5? Isn't this the guy that unironically plays Super Turbo in his free time? There are so many ways for literal retards to unjustifiably wiggle their way out of criticism or accountability by these broadly validated words and labels, by people who are equally thoughtless and incapable of ever engaging with anything they disagree with.

Back in the day, when I was younger and the internet was less prevalent. Logical Fallacies obviously existed, but they weren't borderline insurmountable. There was this implication in real life (especially in a classroom setting) that if somebody made an argument, the other person would actually have to think up a counterargument instead of just saying "meds", "schizo", "loser" etc.

Because if somebody made a point and somebody else called them a loser, they'd look like a fucking goof trying to escape an argument.

This wasn't a law, so it wasn't always the case. You can kind of escape this by making it so they can't make an argument in the first place (Just make everything a joke and call them a nerd, or skits before they can even make a point, we said skits in the past instead of schizo)

I'm NTA, I'm the original guy. I just feel like retardation has been donned like a badge that lets you escape being held accountable for your retardation, like a cop badge that lets you question somebody that normally wouldn't answer your question, except the latter has a fucking point and can technically held accountable by the law and government.

EX Grab has longer range than any of her (and afaik any character's) 5 framers though. There's a lot of ranges where scissors is safe but a command grab from manon will land on bison's 3rd actionable frame, making it a proper 50/50 command grab mixup.

A grappler at +5 within command grab range is strong, that shouldn't be something hard to understand.

This is retarded babble that fundamentally does not understand what a mixup is. A true mixup is always a guess on both the attacker and defender's part.
Either manon grabs and the opponent either jumps (bad for manon) or blocks (good for manon), otherwise manon strikes and the opponent either jumps (good for manon) or blocks (neutral for manon). That is a decision tree which is in her favor.

Why are you trying to talk about fighting games at all if don't understand why a grappler grabbing you is a threat?

No that's not why the threat isn't strong, it's not strong because it's not a fucking mixup, and Manon has zero combo threat. Her command grab is one dimensional, this isn't Gief with a dozen command grabs and an armour heavy punch. It's not just that she's "weak" that's vague and meaningless. It's that she doesn't have any tools to threaten Bison at all. Lily is "weak" and shes probably a scarier threat to Bison, because she can actually mix.

Manon in a y situation command grabbing, whether they blocked or jumped. Is a fundamental guess. Not to mention that getting hit mid jump barely converts into anything, even ignoring damage, it's barely Oki either.

I feel like we forget to mention the fact that if he jumps she can't do anything no? Unless I'm wrong. When you hit somebody right after they jump, it cancels their jump, but doesn't it fuck up your combo? If prejump is 4 frames and mp is 7. Shouldn't it hit sometime right after they jumped? 2 from each character

A measurement of outcome

#1: B- Blocks M- Grabs Bison takes significant damage. Manon has no oki. Reset to Neutral
#2: B- Jumps M- Grabs Bison punishes for 80% health
#3: B- Blocks M- MP Bison takes no damage. Manon maybe drive rush cancels pointlessly, or maybe random drive rush command grab, Bison probably jumps.
#4: B- Jumps M- MP Bison gets hit mid air. Manon cannot combo off of this. Bison recovers and blocks.

This is simplified. But regardless. In all of these scenarios Manon has effectively no advantage, and in 2 of them, she can be punished (1 if you don't accept the punish for #3)

imagine if you could press MP and MK while in hitstun to do a Drive Cross and it changes the frame data of the move so you recover quicker, making the opponent unsafe ON HIT and making combos drop.

So if Ken hit you with standing HP, you Drive Cross and when ken cancels it into drive rush for his stuff, you can block it or even just press a button before his cancelled move comes out.

Look at how, to this day, casuals primary complaint about Strive is the lack of IK cinematics.
Say what you will about the game but the way it handles its supers is extremely satisfying. A short cinematic in startup then letting the actual effect play out from the regular view with maybe a slight camera angle shift is so much snappier and more fun than a cinematic. But it isn't enough for the casuals so they bitch and moan endlessly.

It's not downplay, just realism
He factually doesn't have any plus frame buttons, or a traditional shoto fierce button, and many of his enders are interruptable/don't give a good reward on counterhit (e.g. Jinrai kick)
On top of that he lacks the ability to shimmy the way most characters can with his throw loop
He's not a terrible character, but he's unconventional and learning him has been an exercise in forgetting SF6-isms which has been quite tricky

If you're looking at the input reader in training mode or whatever, the attack icon represents every frame that the icon was held down. If you push LP then wiggle the stick you'll get a bunch of lines with LP on it despite only pressing it once and the game treating it as one input.

In SF5 we got a new character, a powerpoint, trials, music, and a stage.
