The way this now feels like a modern 10$ indie horror game (both visually and gameplay wise) fucks with my brain a bit.
Playing it after the Remake does two things:
1) The game now feels like a speedrun of itself and is not scary at all
2) The trashy voice acting that didn't bother me the first time now does. It handicaps and unravels any dramatic effect of nearly every dramatic scene (which are 90% of em).
The gameplay loop is okay, but it really is the barest of the bones you could find out there in the "PS2 masterpieces" land. All it is there for is to serve as a plate for the meat of atmosphere and vibes to lay on, which doesn't help its case as a "masterpiece". SH2 didn't age well at all, and the Remake (which itself feels archaic in many ways) coupled with my acquaintance with the many inspirations it directly pulls from (from Steven King to Twin Peaks) that i was able to watch in the time since first playing this game - made it that much more obvious.
It's an okay game with some outstanding art and music peppered through. That's about it. Which means Bloober have made a truly faithful remake of it, didn't they.
7/10
