How much of a bad idea is it to play as an ironman without ever getting to even midgame on a normal account? I'm currently iron with most skills no higher than 30 and am considering if i should just switch to normal. On one hand, getting basic stuff like teleport tablets or runes from GE would be nice, on the other hand i kinda like finding out how to get stuff i would otherwise just buy, and i don't want skilling to devolve to "get money to buy all the skilling resources"

depends what you're looking for
iron accounts are more unique and you (assuming you arent using guides)
mains are faster and more linear and lead into the end game pvm much faster
if you're more of a skiller, i'd say iron, but if you enjoy convenience and just want to raid or gwd, a main works better for that
personally i have a maxed main and barely play my iron, it's like 1300ish total level after 4 years

Maybe i could deactivate my ironman status and play as a sort of pseudo-iron where i buy stuff like teleport tablets and stamina potions (as well as some of the more annoying quest items) off a GE but still mostly rely on getting gear myself and use Ironman skilling methods

you could yeah, the first time playing through is usually better on a main
if you're extra mentally ill like a lot of us, you can play two accounts at once, a lot of people do that (i am not one of them because it makes me feel overwhelmed for some reason)

UIM is complete cancer though and deserves no respect. i think bronzeman mode is probably the actual best way to play the game since it circumvents the obnoxious need to do herb runs constantly.
