In the endgame i feel like Strohl is the most pointless member of your party powerwise. Everyone has a strong role against enemies or bosses but I cant figure out what Strohl is good for.

Well I'm taking my sweet time and I'm on course for a 75-80 hour run. So 90 if you're going REAL slow, 40-50 if you're just skipping shit you don't care about, and about 70 if you're going for the full experience.
It's worth noting though that while it might be a bit shorter than purseowner games, there's a lot less lollygagging. Fewer social links, less points for social stats, and every social link ALWAYS ranks up when you do it. So it's pretty much the same length, just condensed.

I'm at 50 hours and depending how slow I go it could be 10 or 20 more hours. Not skipped anything and nearly have all SLs done. Time will mostly depend on if I decide to grind. I imagine if you were on normal or easy you could blast through it pretty quick.

It's not particularly hard. I think most bosses are designed well enough that you can use neat tactics. But the latter half of the game is buff/debuff -> big attack. Some have ways to try and interrupt this with status effects and the like but that at best delays the inevitable. Overall I still think SMT handles that style better cause the level of variety demons offer means you can do that in weird ways.

My biggest hurdle is never really settling on a healer.

Enemy damage is increased in general quite a bit, higher chance of anxiety (not that it seems to matter), crits and weakness hits are 3x, item drop rate is doubled, exclusive boss (tho someone figured out save editing to fight it in NG).

How does the summoner and devil summoner work? Their abilities can only be used within the archetype and can't be inherited to other archetypes? Not even between themselves? Devil summoner has literally 1 spell and I can't inherit the regular summoner spells.

Royal Dancer is a literal nothingburger. 1 attack and a bunch of weakness implants. Completely worthless except for the party charge.

I just beat the game and I’ve gotta say I absolutely love the ending. Probably my favorite ending in any Persona/SMT game. Walking through the city and getting the vibe from everyone on how things are going was great. They struck the perfect balance between realistic and optimistic. And they didn’t spare any expense on the new profile pics and models for your party members, either.

Me too. I adore how the game ends in an epilogue where you get to just vibe around and see the results of your actions. The story pretty much saying "hey we cant eliminate racism, inequality and all that problem but we can hope to work towards it anyways" is such a hopeful message to have for a JRPG. The fact that they played it straight and have it end on a happy ending is so sweet too, definitely a JRPG classic and deserves all the high scores it got.

I'm gonna say it but the dungeons are too difficult and not that fun, just an enormous slog. I feel the devs absolutely do not intend you to do these in 1 day but that's retarded because the game is on a timed schedule. Between ambushes being an instant gameover (basically have to alt-f4 or you're watching a 5 minute cutscene of the enemies raping your party), the enormous level jumps between floors, the most punishing MP economy I've seen in an Atlus game and an incredible lack of player strength it just feels overtuned and unfun.

Yeah maybe. It's WAY harder than both SMTV and SMTVV on hard mode. I would put this into DDS/SMT3 hard mode tier (maybe one below). Definitely the hardest RPG I played this year, I beat FE: Engage on Maddening earlier this year and thought that was pretty hard but this shits all over it in difficulty.

Really? That’s a surprise to me as someone who played both. SMTV was fun, but the story was really thin and beyond running around the open world fighting there were no other gameplay elements, whereas Metaphor has the social sim stuff, the time management, side dungeons, puzzles, the real time combat and more interesting party members on top of more complex, detailed world building.

Then just cast ice, which costs 10mp and does like 500 damage for an instant kill while you restore 10 mp.

I wish you could get level up items like in V. Sometimes you're just a level lower than you need to be for an area, and considering you can already grind archetype rare candy like crazy I don't think it'd be a balancing issue. Would also help with the late game being a boss rush.

The tower is short and nothing s really a challenge there.

thats the issue. in this game when an enemy goes from "red" to "yellow" when fairy scanning you get a huge damage boost, like 50%+. if they're red they do more damage to you and take less.

Nah he wrote the books being an idealistic traveller before he visited the elda village. It was there that he left the books so that Louis and eventually a copy found it's way to the prince. Like I said when you go down to the Shinjuku area of the dungeon the levels of the monsters jump by like EIGHT, there's monsters here ten levels higher than the floor above, what exactly is the intention then? I fully believe the devs designed and were like oh the players are gonna notice the level jump and leave the dungeon and do some side content and come back later but no one is going to do that because it's a Persona style calendar game and you get fucked for doing that.

Pretty much, the game should have made it clear that it's kill or be killed. Even the taunt is clearly a stopgap since it only works every other turn. Of course defensive investments won't help you clear stuff efficiently.

Mage MC is honestly a lot easier having played both, Strohl and Hulk can do Physical stuff well enough but their Magic performance is very lacking. Mage MC hits hard and is the best generator of press turns. And Mage MC does want to go through Healer, Mage or Seeker at various points in the early-game because they will each have points where they have the best weapons available or for the job. Alternatively you do have someone else do it but again the gap between Mage MC doing it and someone else is larger than in a Physical context.

I actually got good use out of taunt and some more creative strategies early game but now I do feel I either just nuke everything into oblivion or lose. Feels kinda bad, stats are too narrow in what they do, luck should have benefit for a mage build even in combat.

We'll see, I'm going to experiment with it, especially because I'm doing no Royal Archetypes. Going into the Dark class and spamming the Severe Dark seems interesting. I don't disagree that Phys is better in endgame, but it's not like you don't have other carries, Basilio is insane and you can make Summoner DPS work too with Dances. Even if MC's performance is that much worse, turn him into the buff bot, no big deal. I think it'll be fine spamming a Severe Synthesis, tho.

Stats matter especially in late game. Assuming the formula is correct, around 60 STR/MAG your weapon damage is multiplied by 2, at 99 it's ~2.7
Not worth it going all the way to 99, but hybrid build at 60/60 is viable.

Honestly, STR/MAG is quite good. With all the bonuses you get from your endgame armor and weapons you'd hit the cap if you tried to only level 1 skill. Even with MAG/STR/END I got pretty close.

Man, I finished the game and feel kinda empty but playing through NG+ and having to re-aquire all the archetypes sounds like such a pain in the ass.
I'd like to experiment with classes I didn't use like Gunner or Merchant but it'll take a while to get Gunner and Merchant will be nerfed until I'm at the end of the game again.
I don't know why the protagonist couldn't at least maintain them. I don't think I would mind that much if I could start the game off as Brawler for fun.

You get a lot of courage and wisdom from just flying around doing quests, so focus on Tolerance (to unlock more of Maria’s tanks) and Eloquence (Because the debate stages are super good sources of it AND you get Imagination too). Other than that just read all the books as you get them.

Making the Follower Rank always level up when you spend time with your followers and ramping up the rate you earn Virtue points really helped condense the social stuff down to where it works in that timeframe. 8 part links doesn’t hurt either over 10. Basilio is definitely a beast (heh), yeah. I gave Strohl all the passive skills and good equipment and he needed and he was still struggling to keep up with him unless his critical hits landed. Inflicting weakness with a severe damage that matches the weakness you inflict is too absurd.

The thing is that even though there is only 8 ranks. There is still small moments like getting to learn more about characters through stuff like social stat building when you do it on the runner with them. Plus Rank 9 and Rank 10 may as well be the scenes you get before the final battle and then the one you get during the epilogue.

You avoid taking any elevators to the boss refights in the final dungeon to weaken it.
Final boss gets 9 press turns instead of 5(adds an extra 4 when it's close to death) and it'll reduce your press turns to 1 instead of 3.

Pretty sure Heismay became the captain of the knight order and not the city guards. Basilio was the one who became the guard captain and got Louis's people to work for him because they trusted him. Strohl just became a governer noble I think.

Im 2 days from calamity event, already beat the necromancer. Everyone is around level 17
Am I supposed to level multiple archetypes on each character simultaneously?
Like my protagonist is Mage. But I need to level his Healer up?
I thought another team member would show up and be the healer, but I did some spoiler googling and apparently not.
So rn my protagonist has level 15 mage, but lvl 2 healer (farming xp in the desert)
None of the other 2 have alt archetypes.
Am I just fucked?
Do I have to start over?
Small spoiler: Did some googling and found out best end game archetype for Hulk is magic knight. But she needs to be a level like 30 knight and level 20 mage. Seriously, a fucking level 20 mage on my tank?

Someone please explain.

I don't think there were any plans to, it's just classic anime "will they, won't they" that doesn't go anywhere.
Honestly having romance just paints them into a corner and they either have to ignore the decisions you made entirely(Trials of Cold Steel) or throw out the cast and get a new one(Persona 3,4,5 eventually).
Not having romance means we may actually get a sequel. Though I do kind of think a sequel would be hundreds of years later with a new cast and all of our old characters being legends.

Mage MC is fine given the first two party members are physical oriented. You get more archetype EXP than you even know what to do with over the course of the game. Just build their "main" archetypes and branch out using the A-EXP items as necessary. Stop looking shit up and just play the goddamn game, you can grind the other archetypes whenever you next have the chance.

You're overthinking it way too much, anon. Max out a decent Archetype, like Mage for MC, Knight for Hulk and Warrior for Strohl. Have them sit in that Archetype and you'll accumulate EXP items to distribute. Then you upgrade to new Archetypes that give skills that will be useful, generally ones that can target weaknesses of what you're fighting or ones that are stronger (like moving up from Light to Medium damage). Then you inherit those useful skills into your maxed out Archetype, and once you have enough EXP to go to the next tier and level it up decently, you swap over.

Yes because he's 8 levels higher than me and a taunting Hulkenberg in the backrow + defending as Magic Knight still dies to 3 attacks. In fact I have to attack him and reset if he wakes up.

There's plenty of things that get stored in the executable that're unrelated to assets
Hell sometimes assets can get tossed in there anyway. The reason why it's such a pain in the ass to edit the P5 message interface for example is because it's a strangely rendered compressed 3D model that's sitting in the executable. Navigator dialogue changes require an executable patch because that's in there too. The functions that most of the flowscripts call are stored in the executable in the first place. What Map, Enemy, Model IDs are valid for the game to use are in there. You need a patch to the exe to make the game ignore the EXIST table so things you try to add to it don't crash the game instantly. And all that's just off the top of my head for a game that's almost a decade old and way more of a known quantity.

This is why you see those mod discord regulars making fun of the pirating effort on twitter because they think they've found bigger dumbasses than they are
Take it from me this is not a great hill to want to die on because the last thing anyone should want is to look dumber than those guys

Yes. It gets a little more nuanced than that as you go through the game. The main thing to keep in mind is what's the best gear do you have access to? Mage MC is a great example, Magic MC wants to swap between Seeker, Healer and Mage depending on if your Sword, Staff or Mace is your best weapon. Furthermore you might be in a class that has a weakness for a fight; swap out of it, bring the relevant DPS skill into another class, and it'll be a lot easier.

Just did the whole opening act of Altabury Heights
I think that was my least favorite part of the game so far. Twist after twist after twist after twist, all within a few moments of each other. Might be a little biased because I liked Rella, but that whole sequence felt like a stream of consciousness to course correct the story or something.

If you want the easiest, smoothest experience possible:
Hulk should level Mage, and her signature Archetype
Strohl should level General and his signature archtype
Heismay should level Merchant, Gunner and his signature Archetype
Junah should level Faker and her Signature Archetype
Eupha should level Seeker and her Signature Achetype
Basilio should level Brawler and his signature Archetype
The MC should level mage and healer if you want MAG or Brawler/Warrior/Sniper if you want STR
If a character cannot level any further along these paths, you can either keep them at their maxxed level and store the EXP for later to level them once you unlock it or just level something else that has cool passives you want.

It can probably work with a Formation of Vigor and Shelter transfer. Make sure you end every turn with Formation of Shelter so everyone's in the back row. Refresh Vigor on the turn it would expire.

that part of the game definitely feels like they've been told they had a year or two of dev time left and they need to wrap things up and they went OH SHIT we have to finish these plotpoints and go straight into the endgame right away otherwise we wouldnt be able to make the ending stick. Definitely the weakest part of the game but they went all out for the ending which makes it worth it. Hope they can come back and redo that part of the game though.

The sheer quantity of enemies kind of fucks you if you have a tendency to take every fight. You're bleeding mp after every encounter. I only managed to clear it in 1 day because I had done all the side content first AND just straight up ignored most of the enemies on the second floor

I have very little doubt about that either especially since not only did they fully model the coronation outfits, but because the outfits were 100% planned to be used in gameplay at one point, unlike Junah's two songtress outfits. Strohl's battle animations sometimes look a little funky with it, but they're set up to use bones in the cape separate from the bones in his normal jacket, and it sways naturally even when you use his default battle pose.
Still, it not being in the main story makes the Rella part of the twist not get as much time as it deserved. Rest of the sequence is elder god tier.

I don't think so. Aside from probably having a dungeon cut. Louis dying twice only works cause he is a fun villain who loves the theatre of it. For the actual story it seems pointless as they could've done the fake out once. They clearly didn't know how to justify the whole set piece and where the spear was leading to many no gang we just gotta. Rella being bad then not goes by way too quick. Forden and Slaphead don't get a fight at all. In general there's just an abrupt end to the contest without a real climax to it. I'm also just not a fan of long stretches where you have little choice. It's the worst aspect of P5 and Metaphor had mostly avoided it. But here you get thrown from boss to boss and I can only imagine that will frustrate people who didn't make sure to level beforehand. Also feels like Altabury has the least personality cause you barely spend any time there or get to know anyone.

It is an end to it but not a climax for the competition that makes it a satisfying thing. You've been fighting multiple people along the way, and then in the scene they just go yeah this whole thing was a farce whatever. Soon it's all brushed away by Louis going actually lets just make it a battle royale. The whole thing is basically shuffled off stage as they don't need the plot device any more. Forden had been an antagonistic figure throughout, they set him up as actually behind the assassination and we already had a fake out fight with the monk guy. A fight of some sort would absolutely fit. The spear stuff was just nonsensical as well. We can't take it back while there is a commotion and people wouldn't know what is happening that's stealing. Let's give it away then steal it back later I guess when the church has it claimed. This was after already jumping through the roof and stabbing a man for all to see then magicing it back.

It's real long. It's the only one I considered leaving part way through until the boss showed up and found out it's pretty much scripted.

I had the squad of 3/4 for a while, then get the 5th party member at the ass end of the 3rd city (with the longest freeroam time) and then you get the last two almost back to back, with just a shit load of cutscenes between them.

To counter what the other anon said, I never swapped party members based on weapons showing up.
Heismay was still using a weapon from dungeon 3 at the end of the game because it had a good passive(Auto Masukukaja).
You can really do whatever once you get a feel for the system but until then equipping weapons with the biggest number doesn't hurt.

Right from the start of the story your party is trying to game the tournament for the throne because it has nothing to do with the royal magic, so the last trial being the one where it falls apart due to the figurehead driving it being killed makes perfect sense. Moving on, no less than three times they tell you that the church is making the divine relics part of their faith for public opinion points including the last time when the party is standing there commenting on it pretty much entirely for the sake of justifying why just taking the spear back when the whole crowd has their eyes on it is a bad idea. You're also wrong about the assassination attempt, no one saw the MC stab Louis with the spear, which was why the plan was to call it back when making their escape, and you're double wrong because they never fucking called the spear back during the assassination attempt, because the wound wasn't fatal.

Them going down and just straight up admitting they defied the late king's will using a pagan artifact to kill a leading candidate felt especially dumb. Would have been easy for Forden to just arrest and publicly execute them as a move to gain more support from whatever remains of Louis' faction after his supposed death.

No I just think how it happened was lame and poorly justified. I know everything you said, I don't think it played out well or interesting in that section. There is a difference between events and execution. After spending so long fighting off various characters you want there to be a big finale to the competition. It has been a driving force for a while. So to see it shuffled off is boring. Imagine if 3/4 of the way up Tartarus just fell down and you were told nah we're not doing that any more. That's not me being wrong, that's the narrative bending over backwards to justify itself. Nobody, in a packed theatre, saw a guy in the big box right by the stage, get stabbed with a magic glowing spear. BUT after they did him in the second time Strohl goes oh no we can't pull it back now that's stealing, let's try and steal it back once the church has full control of it. The problem was they never tried to call it back a second time for incredibly stupid reason.

You keep saying "no that's stealing" is the reason over and over again like a 12 year old but you don't seem to have any clue what that actually means. Strohl isn't worried about getting fucking arrested, which is why once Forden gives himself away they try to go after him, he's worried about there being a huge public outcry to stealing a holy relic that was just made part of the church specifically to improve Forden's standing in the actual election race and not their fakey bullshit tournament. This is why the scene where Louis renders the lance entirely pointless is brilliant, because all he had to do was twist public perception of it a certain way after the Sanctist figurehead took himself out. This other point about the competition is stupid too, because you don't even get to fight half the candidates until AFTER the church's sideshow is finished because the actual election which is the actual driving force of the whole story is still happening.

How would letting him have it make the task easier once they figure out exactly what it is and can do? We were in competition with everyone cause we were in the same race. You talked too, debated, fought and generally seen all of them. You're not arguing it was great how they were shuffled off but trying to justify why it happened. When the big problem is how boring a send off it is. All cause the plot was getting incredibly rushed.

What the fuck is wrong with Heismay's Royal Archetype? Strohl, who has been with you from the very beginning and has the most time to get archetype experience needs the warrior line and commander line. That's it. Then Heismay needs Thief line, gunner line, knight and magic knight to unlock the last of the gunner line, the merchant line, and commander to unlock the last of the merchant line. Two of these elite classes are locked behind the last chapter of the game. At least Eupha's synergizes well because she needs Magic Seeker for Devil Summoner so then its not out of you way to get Soul Hacker for her royal archetype.

They were working on Catherine Full Body until 2019 and full development didn't start until after that. From there the game took 3-4ish years with the rest of the time being spent on the ports and localisation, as simultaneous releases on multiple platforms is new to them.

They don't piss off Forden's majority, no one knows what the spear is.

There's actually quite a few mentions of killing the dragons between the final dungeon and epilogue. It felt kind of forced at times (like when the king and the princes mother are talking and she randomly brings up how he killed all the dragons) but I always appreciate to see my efforts being recognised in regards to optional content. It ties it all together instead of it feeling like there's a side content dimension separate from the main story.

Mage Academy. The opera house is exactly the size and length it should be for being set in something that isn't a huge dungeon.
Metaphor is like Bloodborne where they didn't try to take something an stretch it to be more video gamey. They put it in the game exactly the way it would be. For Metaphor that helps the arcs be a lot more varied than any of the persona games because you aren't just moving from dungeon to dungeon.
And at the same time, we can compare the Mage Academy to Castle Cainhurst in that game where there's a whole thing they show you that you just never get to explore because they couldn't get it in. Junah at the very end of the game REALLY makes it sound like they deliberately decided to make it future DLC at some point in development though.

I didn't, did you? Louis didn't enter the tournament until the last trial and his supporters didn't care. The tournament framework is basically there to win over everyone that isn't a Louis supporter. He isn't going to bring any of them over by appealing to other church tenants regardless of how devout they are.

Literally just go back to the part of the game where Louis falls through the ceiling throws the whole plan into disarray. They're not going to get out of there anymore like they planned so now they have to make it look like they beat him in a duel and they're actually church loyalists. Will is now #3 so Forden has these two reasons to not do anything to him and doesn't know he has a way to bypass both of them. The next day, the situation is completely different because now Forden knows exactly what the spear is AND the party goes back to accuse him of conspiracy, which is why he then instantly makes it about murdering another candidate with a holy relic. It doesn't make sense for him to do this that night, but it does make sense for him to do it the next day.

Depends. The dungeon is LONG, so you might want a level advantage from side dunegons so it takes less time. Also Junah gets an mp restore bonus so you might want to do her side quest and level up her bond for that, so that's what I would recommend. But there is a reason to rush it and it's because Eupha joins at the end of the dungeon so if you do it early you can bring her along to the side dungeons.

Right now I'm getting walled by the rock worms but the whole game for me has pretty much just been either I get lucky and steamroll the encounter, or my whole team gets wiped in 1 turn because every attack does 50-70% of a character's HP, so I just have to spam L3 until I get good RNG

Their stat blocks are absurd, Masked Dancer's ability to force weaknesses is incredible, Summoner (especially with Devil Summoner) has some of the best 1-turn encounter clearing in the game, and Berserker is far and away the best single-target damage dealing archetype in the game. It helps that the last three characters' stat blocks are tailor made for it, like Basilio's stats far outclassing Strohl. Besides Hulkenberg there's basically zero reason to use any of the og party members

I dunno, General's Frigid Tactics into Summon Fairy (modified) got busted fast. I also had Heismay on Elemental Master so the damage started racking up fast. She's not sustainable, but she ended up helping a lot in the first final boss phase for me.

Kriegante is still pretty early game anon, once you hit Max with one of them it will speed up a lot since you can start hoarding the AEXP items max archetypes generate and just funnel them into what you need.
Really late game, having everybody on max archetypes and doing a dungeon runthrough usually generated 40~ hero leaves, which is enough to max out any archetype from scratch.

Similar argument for Eupha, by the time you get her she gets a bunch of free skills that are pretty much all she needs. All either of these girls really need is some Healer levels and Junah can slack there too.

As for Basilio, he comes when AEXP is plentiful and the classes he wants give him the passives he's looking for anyway. He's comically easy to raise.

You cant inherit royal skills, so you cant put the turn delete passive on Ninja. You can have two deleters on one team with the accessory if you want I guess, but it doesnt make Heismay useless.
