I would LOVE to talk about final fantasy, and have plenty once they fuck off for more than 30 minutes. But I cannot stand the overopinionated. Opinions are worthless unless they are built around facts and are constructive if they are negative. Preferences and feelings don't feed the starving. Repeated opinions get so annoying after the 10th time especially when they are being pushed as fact. Unfortunately, these kinds of people are aiming to justify their shitty opinions through consensus. And I can't help but feel they want parroters. The answer is two-layered. People found appeal in stuff like the Game of Thrones show or Breaking Bad because they came at a very specific time, when millennials came into adulthood jaded and cynical from the institutions their parents trusted and they didn't (the US government, churches, business conglomerates...), so they were received as refreshing for portraying a 'real' and raw approach. But the former's reputation became butchered after literally no one, including GRRM, was capable of writing a satisfactory conclusion to it. As a side note, this is because modern people are offended at the very thought of a tradition of wisdom passed down from master to student, and this encapsulates storytelling too, something that Breaking Bad or BCS never bothered in rejecting.

Now. you have the issue of CBU3 portraying a watered down version of an already watered down TV story with no meaningful catharsis. Something inspired by ASOIAF's better elements of drama surrounding pragmatic morality and the horrors of war could've been legitimately good. But what you get instead is something extremely shallow and dishonest. A LotR inspired story would be harder to screw up since it's so fundamental, but that's neither here nor there I guess. Not that I wouldn't expect Yoshida and Maehiro not to screw it up. That's the problem with self-absorbed writers, and Japan has plenty of them.

We've seen this tide change in the last 7 years when Zelda, a series that historically sold less than FF, had BotW (2017) outsell the multiplatform FF15 (2016) three to one.

Its a completely arbitrary metric. FF in particular uses it prop itself up because its sales tend to be very front-loaded. The lifetime sales for these games tend to be only around double the launch sales, whereas other big games have lower launch sales but have lifetime sales of 4x-5x whatever launch was. You see it right there in that image, with the exception of Ragnarok because that's a much newer title. Both XV and VIIR only ended with roughly 2x their launch sales.

Overall long-term sales, as well as sales relative to budget, are probably the two most important metrics. Nier: Automata was made with practically zero budget, so it was already considered a big success when it managed to pass just a million copies sold, let alone the 7+ million its at now. Dragon Age: Inquisition debuted with pretty weak sales, only debuting at #5 in the UK and launching outside of the top ten in the US, yet it was revealed recently that somehow it ended up selling 12 million lifetime copies over the course of a decade.

Considering how beloved FFX is in Japan I'm surprised the remaster wasn't handled with more care.

Keep in mind: 16fags swore up and down on both /v/ and /ffg/ that the majority of Yoshi's cult is on PC and that the port's sales would "shake the foundations" selling MORE than on console.
This did not age particularly well for them as you can see.
