Dead Engine Dev here. Dunno if you were around at 3AM GMT this morning but I've decided to risk a week making a memegame out of what I've already made in Dead Engine. Reason being, there's a lot I need to do in Dead Engine that I've never done (menus, options, UI, savegame management) and I want something smaller and meaningless to fuck up on, and then translate those lessons over to Dead Engine when I know what I'm doing.

I'm also looking for something social media friendly, with memes in it (y'know like squirrel with a gun and aggrocrab?) that I can make tiktoks/twitter/instagram posts of to gain a bit of notoriety. Not going to be blowing £3k on marketing it. Not putting any money INTO it at all, in fact.

I know starting a side project is risky, I know how many of you think it'll end, but what I said last night is I'm spending a week on this, and if it's not nearly ready to go by next Sunday, I'll scrap it and go back to Dead Engine wholesale. Otherwise, might be a good marketing tool/low budget moneymaker. Probably put it out on Steam for about £1.99 or something. Might try and get it up in time for October's Next Fest.

It's got shit in it like dropkicking lumberjacks and making them explode, then using that to refill your turbo and doing a ninja run. The main loop will literally just be crazy taxi, except with eating fish instead of dropping off passengers. It's actually just one of Dead Engine's missions copy-pasted and extrapolated.

Key thing is this took me about three hours today, and thanks to reusing some code and graphics from Dead Engine, it was effortless. I do know it's risky and I wouldn't suggest someone ELSE starts a side project while they're balls-deep in a main thing that people want to see progress, but this feels like an instance where making this is, in a way, actually still working on the main thing.

Am I biting off more than I can chew starting a stealth game project as a total codelet? My goal was to make something similar to Thief, only at a much, much smaller scale. So far I've been able to figure out basic movement, shadow detection, and some other stuff, and I think with enough banging my head against the wall I can figure out attacking and various items.
The only think that scares me though are NPCs. I need, at the very least, the NPCs to chase the player and patrol areas. Is this shit as difficult to implement as I'm imagining it to be?

Making a stealth game ain't no easy task, especially for a codelet like yourself. You might be able to figure out some basic crap like movement and shadow detection, but NPCs? That's a whole nother level, bro. You gotta be prepared to bang your head against the wall for weeks, maybe even months, to get that shit working. And even then, it might not be perfect. So, are you biting off more than you can chew? Yeah, probably. But hey, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, who knows, maybe you'll come out the other end with something good.

Which one of you is telling me the truth?
In all seriousness, even if it does end up being extremely difficult, 4 months of banging my head against a wall is about how long I anticipated it would take to figure it out. If worst comes to worst I can always make some sort of Phantom Hourglass-esque stealth/puzzle hybrid where you're basically just evading guard NPCs on a set path and die instantly if you get caught.

Start out by making a Metal Gear clone. I don't mean MGS3 or something, I mean the original MG1 on MSX and NES. Most stealth games in existence and certainly all good ones descended from this one game, and it's simple enough that you should be able to figure out how to replicate all major features without too much problem to create a prototype for a more complex stealth game in either 2D or 3D.

Also having enemies chase the player in winding corridors without navmeshes may be difficult if you're trying to do it from scratch but this is a solved problem at this point. If there aren't complicated winding corridors for them to get stuck in it may be as simple as having enemies move toward the player once they have noticed the player. Making them forget the player is simple as having a timer that ticks down either each frame or each gametick (I'd recommend gameticks for something like that) while they have lost line of sight on the player- This is also super easy to implement even for a codelet. Patrols are just scripted movement, have them move back toward a point in the patrol and start the patrol again if they forget the player.

One small thing I'd suggest that may not be immediately obvious is a "blackboard," an object or data container that stores information known by your enemies that you want them to share with each other. Different features of the blackboard can be changed or activated with a difficulty setting (or for more difficult levels where enemies are supposed to have their shit together more). This allows you to do things like have every enemy close in on your position if one enemy sees you, have enemies converge on your last-known position then start patrolling, have enemies patrol faster and respond faster to gaining line-of-sight if they're on alert, have enemies sometimes check a radius around your last-known position, etc in a way that is intrinsically immersive.

I specified MG1 because the entire MGS series is probably out of scope for someone's first project with no real coding experience but basically any NES game is doable at least in terms of mechanics if not content (stuff like Castlevania and Zelda 1 have a lot going for them in the content department). Also Thief is descended from Metal Gear, and Metal Gear Solid is obviously descended from Metal Gear, but MGS and Thief are very different because they went in very different directions with the concepts from that first generation of stealth games. Thief makes you feel like a sneaky cat burglar who has to rely on his wits, MGS makes you feel like Rambo (especially Phantom Pain), a big strong heavily-armed supersoldier who only has to rely on stealth and traps at any point because he's so heavily outnumbered.

The base salary of a game developer in US is $64k per year, $4,800 per month. I'm a solo dev so If I apply to indie fund and make a budget accordingly, would it be considered too much? I would be asking the bare minimum. I don't live in US but the the wages here are way too low. Housing and utilities is easily $1k per month, and they say it should be one third of your income. So I'm thinking I can't go lower than $3k per month. I expect the development to be at least a year, and the game is a strategy game along the lines of Civilization (genre and depth wise, not production qualitywise obviously)
Are these numbers sensible or are they too much?

tl;dr - start with state machines, how to trigger changes between various states, then when you wish to expand start looking into events.
interfaces may be helpful here too, especially if you want different guards to have different behaviors (ie - one guard type does not engage in combat, but will sound off an alarm) but will still fall under the guard classification.
figure out what you would like to accomplish, then break that down as much as possible and implement those smaller problems/solutions.

I agree with the sentiment but I'll say that you need to be able to produce art that is one or two levels above what you want to consistently produce.
So if you want to make a game that looks like stardew valley, with hundreds of items, characters, tiles, etc that are consistently of that quality, then you should aim for being able to make a few things that are of higher quality than those.
If you want to consistently make animations that are the quality of say dragon ball, then you should be able to make a short animation that is Ghibli quality.
Same with programming, if your game requires an intermediate level of programming knowledge then you should be familiar with some advanced concepts as well.
If you're running and want to run 10 miles averaging 7 minutes a mile then you should be able to run just one mile in 6 minutes
It shifts your frame of reference so that you are not operating at 100% all the time to avoid burnout and allow you to have consistent quality and pacing

Has anybody experimented with custom LLMs that have a specific documentation in memory? I'm asking ChatGPT to convert Unity scripts to Godot, but it tends to get a lot of the names and specifics wrong.
I think training llama with some documentation and code conversion samples might be a neat idea. Would solve the friction problems from converting engines if it's useful enough.
Something that can convert gdscript to C# well would be useful too.

Because they're talking about engines that 1: are accessible for indie game devs and 2: are not too restrictive in the type of game you can make. RPGMaker for example is basically a generic old FF-style JRPG that comes with modding tools and no content so you can "make" a game with it but it's more like a mod of a very basic RPG. MT Framework is Capcom's proprietary engine and you only get to use it if you work for Capcom.

And then once you pare away engines like that (there are a lot just in the picture you posted), you also have to get rid of game engines that just aren't very good (by rights this should eliminate cryengine and gamemaker, both of which are basically obsolete at this point; no reason to use GM when Godot exists and no reason to use Cryengine when Unreal exists, but both of those have so much momentum you still see them gasping for air here and there nowadays). A lot also aren't even free to use, like Gamebryo, which is shit AND paid; the options that make the most sense for indies and amateurs are those that have little to no cost to entry and are either entirely free like Godot or have costs kick in after a profit threshold like Unreal. What does that leave? Unreal, Unity, Godot and enginedevving with code libraries like raylib.

It's not as hard as you think to set up the basics. You can learn what to do from a few youtube tutorials. The nice thing about engine dev is you don't have to make a whole big general purpose game engine, only the parts that you actually need for your game.

I mean, it's really not that hard to move collision shapes around a bit, but having to redraw the map for every change is a fair point. Then again as long as you use layers intelligently I can't imagine it would be that hard to group entities together and nudge them around in whatever art program.
I'm going to try it. I think it might help to give my game a more soulful, hand drawn look.

My take aways
- Publishers (people who already take a cut from the actual devs) are the ones upset about this

No shit since the changes were targeted at nickle and diming mobileshit. It's still something you wouldn't want to deal with as someone selling a game for a flat fee and the whole way they made the announcement, how they planned to pull the installs out of their ass and make you pay whatever. It's all sketchy as fuck. Any person who isn't year+ into a project would wanna jump ship after they saw all that.

Even if they roll back the changes I wouldn't trust Unity as a company anymore. My next game will be made with something else. I'm in the process of figuring out what.

Duplicate the lower half of your model and scale it up and most of the weights will work just like that. You might wanna set some specific edgeloops where you split the model and hide the underlying mesh so that it doesn't clip.

You're just repeating FUD from this thread. All Unity games built are already reporting back device related data which is how they know how many people are playing your games. They collect all sorts of information as to your hardware, drivers, ids, ip addresses, etc. There's no "pulling out of their ass". They have data to back it up that's coming from your games everytime someone runs it. If you use Unity Analytics as a developer then you're collecting even more shit on your users for the purpose of ad serving.

Am I the only Unity dev who thinks this entire shitshow is hilarious as fuck? As someone who's likely never going to hit the thresholds I couldn't care less about any of these changes and if things really get worse, there's always still the option of building a game in Unity and decompiling it for a release build in something like MonoGame.

oh dear god... I think I found my calling, and that's to write decent shaders for Godot
Every single shader and post process I've looked at made by godot devs is absolute shit. that shader is going to kill your performance unless you decide to only have 20-30 objects per scene.
not saying don't use it, but look for other solutions once you move past the testing phase.

Don't Steam, Itch, etc track installs? If they try to argue with you on the numbers and it goes to court, the burden of proof is on them, and you can just counterargue that all the excess installs from Unity's side were pirated installs so they don't count.

that post was actually my starting reference for getting serious about creating shaders rather than the typical hyper realistic styles. a lot learned from it already, so possibly yeah. it's a good style and one that is hard to do right.
one problem is that it only works with objects that are up close and gets fucky with high vert counts, so you need to depth threshold for the inline effect (like the stylized shadows and hatching). without it, far away objects will become amorphous blobs.

A good video I saw on the subject talked about that. Unity failed, but someone else will succeed in the end. The term used is techno feudalism: in practice where a capitalist crate value to be sold, feudalism rotate around rent without adding nothing. In our specific case its also a tech compound problem, because since we are renting, everything can be pulled under our feet and we cant do nothing. Just think about the censorship of super common stuff like the Simpsons ep in NY or Michael Jackson

They are mobile games. There are literally billions of phone users (Indie and China has over 4B smartphone users alone). Nearly all of these games are F2P Gachas / MTX / Adware hell which means there's no barrier of entry so people just download them, try, and uninstall if they aren't good. I actually fully support what Unity is doing because the install fee 1000000% is directed at F2P MTX / adware games. If you sell your game for a fee then the tiny $0.2-0.01 fee is easily accounted for. It's F2P games that rely on MTX / adware that suffer from this. Unity is unironically going to heal the gaming industry by forcing these companies to change their entire revenue model to not rely on adware / MTX (or switch engines).

Unironically anyone who is against what they are doing is likely some thirdworlder who relies on MTX shit games to make their money and I have no respect for your shovelware.

Working on a fantasy console in C++. It uses 8080 assembly (with some extra instructions) to run programs. I just added debugging so you can set a breakpoint in source, and when the virtual machine hits that memory location, it prints out the original source code line. I want to add vram so that you set sprites with pixel data into some pointer locations similar to the gameboy but simpler to manipulate IO.

If it's really the way you describe it in your post, then it absolutely will not be good for them. If a shitty adware game makes money by showing ads to two billion dirt-poor Indians and Indonesians that download it because it's free, that same game will not be profitable if it ditches the adware model and sets a $1 price upfront, because those are shit games that only work because they're adware.
So by doing this they would force some of their best cashcows to either switch engine or shut down, and get no significant increase in revenue from the people already making non-adware games.
So a much more realistic explanation is that they will force the adware games to use their own ad networks in exchange for dodging the new pricing, as someone already said.

If Unity wasn't struggling for money why would they add yet another monetization fee? They already take a cut of ad revenue if you're using Unity's Ad technologies. The fact of the matter is these mobile games are making bucket loads of money and getting around paying Unity any money because they can roll their own analytics, own ad sourcing, and own MTX stores. None of which Unity sees any cut from.

How so? The only limitation i've found so far with Godot is less graphical features for 3D, but it's not like Unityfags or solodevs are using realistic graphics anyway. Stylized 3D and 2D works just fine in Godot.

I don't know if this is GOOD advice, but it's what I'm doing and it's working so far. Make games that are elements of something you want. Like "a driving game", except the whole point is literally just "to drive". And "a shooting game" except the point is to stand in a room and shoot everything. What you'll do then is teach yourself mechanics and understanding of your process WHILE building finished projects which will put you ahead of 90% of wannabe gamedevs. You'll have both a catalogue of things you can point at and say "I did that" AND a stronger all around understanding of how gamedev works.

I don't mean a sim game but just a game where you like play as a dinosaur trying to make it through life would be cool. I remember when I was a kid back in like 2002 discovery channel's website had a web game that was mostly just moving in a grid with random encounters + some multiple choice things like FF combat where you were a baby allosaur trying to make it to adulthood but it made my imagination go wild for what a "real" dinosaur game could be like. But now it's trivial to make a "real" game as I thought of it back then, and high quality dinosaur assets are everywhere to make it happen, yet every dinosaur game is like a janky zombie game where the zombies look like dinosaurs or something. No reason for them to even be dinosaurs, it's like having dinosaurs is a mark of a shitty game.

The game does not have a consistent perspective at all, I go with whatever fits the scene and the story. The perspective here does not make sense, but it shows everything it needs to show. Having the perspectives be off also creates a sense of surrealism and discomfort I believe, which also fits the story.

I used it years ago with no problems and then I started hearing people having issues with it but people were saying that an update at some point fucked it up, and I was still using a version from a week after 4chan gained webm support so I wasn't affected. thanks. if you enjoy gamedev, then there's no reason you can't just pick an easy engine to fuck around with every so often instead of watching TV or something.
i just do this for fun at this point. i'm a straight white male, so my plans of building a portfolio and getting hired somewhere like an AA studio are done for thanks to the rothschilds.

hybrid income. live somewhere with a low cost of living, get a part time job at a hardware store, and sell games that can get you an extra 10-15k per year.
in total, between my part time job and gamedev related stuff, i only bring in around $35k a year after taxes. but, i only have to work for around 15-20 hours a week, and the rest is spent between game dev and fixing my house. it's really, really low cost, but obviously that varies by your location and how many things you like buying.
the hardest part, for me, is internet because i only have it through my phone. unfortunately, i can't post here all the time because sometimes i'm IP range banned. it also sucks when uploading a game, takes forever. then there's unity's new rule for being online every 3 days. i've never once connected the editor to the internet after the initial download (which i do at the local library)

Anyway like anyone else bitching I'm on their side but it's very funny and tone-deaf that they think abortion funds are fundamentally valid charities and are not politicized when every single moral conflict in the world comes down to the very difficult conflict between the good being life and the good being liberty, and abortion is an issue that notoriously radicalizes those who discuss it precisely because the only two stances that seem rational also exclude one vision of the good entirely for the other, when most people value both in most cases. It's like whining that a eugenics fund isn't accepted as a valid charity and is instead considered a political group, but I bet if you told the person who wrote this that in person they would actually literally screech and have a meltdown screaming "no it's not the same" over and over, because that is how this particular kind of radical always responds when reality doesn't conform to their fantasy.

rural midwest, i qualified for a USDA rural grant instead of doing a standard mortgage so my rates are only 3% instead of 7% or whatever it is now, so my payments are like $350 per month since the house was only $90k. it's a 3 bedroom ranch with 2 acres so not bad.
caveat is the house needed work (floorboards bad condition, roof on shed leaking, etc) and i am required to add value to the home as it is part of a development program.
