and actually, mentioning something like the different classifications of animals, like reptiles, amphibians, mammals, etc or species and subspecies might make for a good example too.
there are mammals but all mammals have differences so we can't just call them all the same thing. it'd be silly to say humans and cats are the same just because they both give their young milk.

and people naming their kids is probably a good example. using names to differentiate others is ingrained in all human cultures.

so even though we're all anons here, we aren't all the same person. so people start calling us different things based on any observable differences. like, xfag draws so every one who draws is xfag. although, that's wrong, but i get where it comes it from.
that's also a case of the anonymity making it harder to actually spot different posters.

but pretty much, everything has to be given names because we use languages to communicate.

It's funny because Doi's comments for Yuzuru's design mention that the shit he wears is meant to pay respect to his dead parents, specifically his dad. So it may be that Yuzuru follows Koshimizu because he is a father figure to him which would kill the Koshimizu fag but make a lot of sense. Dazai's parents are explored but not Yuzuru's.

Can you explain why you like it? My personal interpretation as someone who didn't care for it is that the game is so underwritten that people write the missing half of the story and then grow attached to their headcanons, but now I'm curious.

I love the aesthetic, the flowing blue hair skating through a nightmarescape populated by all my favorite SMT demons. I love how all the demons will react with their battle animations or even do weird shit like summon other demons on the field to get at you. The game does such a great job making all the demons feel like they're the stars of the game. When you're exploring the world it doesn't feel like you're going through a video game grid but actually jumping around between ruins that take elevation into account. What you're saying about filling in the blanks is something I generally like in RPGs, I don't like when your RPGs are just a set of movies and I would argue that's not different from classic Megaten games where story beats happen in individual rooms/squares in the dungeon, and you do have to fill in a lot of what happens in between. The game has context.

here's a rundown on some things i think are interesting.

I haven't played SMTV specifically but thinking about other modern SMT games, whoever goes first would be massively advantaged. Probably every single demon would need both Enduring Soul and Endure (they usually stack) to ensure you don't just get wiped turn 1. A move like SMTIV's Bad Company, which randomly summons a bunch of demons, would actually be really good since either side would get completely wiped on any turn. Dekunda and Dekaja I guess are necessary to have because being totally buffed or unbuffed before your turn starts would be game over. But then, if you know your opponent probably has Dekaja and Dekunda you might just skip some of the buffing/debuffing your first turn and go straight for some kills. Maybe you could do the Demi-fiend DDS1 strat where you go Taunt + Dekaja + big attack every turn, giving yourself big damage on your subsequent attacks that turn and forcing your opponent to Dekunda every turn with no opportunity of buffing since it'll always be Dekaja'd away immediately. If MC can't just have max all stats, I think probably MC going all-in on a survival build with VIT and AGI or whatever might be ideal, so that you can keep summoning demons. But I guess in some games demons can summon each other and MC is often the best damage dealer so maybe not.

Some of the Devil Children games actuall yhave a PvP and it's pretty broken. But there's probably almost no one in the world who took it seriously. Whoever goes turn 1 can use Lucifrost to both destroy the enemy team and also freeze whatever survives so they can't take an action. And Devil Children is one of the rare games in megaten where you're allowed to have multiple of the same demon on the team so there's nothing stopping someone from challenging their friend with 4 Lucifrost's or whatever.

I understand dx2 has something like PvP too and it's super broken and revolves around new rare demons completely fucking up the balance. But I don't play gacha shit so I wouldn't know.

There are some issues with it. The "menu" on top and those circles around the options shouldn't be there, because they add nothing and make it look busier than it is; the demon portraits should have been transparent rather than in boxes which have other circles inside them for no reason.
That said, the crusade against the UI before release was retarded. The demons are perfectly visible, nothing gets covered, the colors make it super easy to tell which is which.

Well that's my point. We're going to start seeing a decline in skill level over time. You used to have people strive to learn a new skill because they wanted something. Like porn of a niche character and they don't have the money to waste on commissions so they try to learn. Most people give up but the few that don't for whatever reason usually take their skill into drawing other shit eventually. You're going to see less and less of that in the future outside of just art but with programing, writing and the like. Why learn a new skill when AI can hand you the media you're craving? If at some point AI reaches a peak or a stalling point in it's development this will become a bigger issue.

current AI art all looks the same, these pieces that would have been considered super high quality a decade ago are now disparaged for being the antithesis of art; mass-produced, literally soulless, you can't feel the work an artist would have actually put into the piece.

for true drawfags it's less about the result and more about the process; for a lot of them drawing is fun and enjoyable, even if a lot of the sketches and pieces they do never meet the public eye; they had fun making it. likewise some people enjoy specific artstyles by specific people, it's a way to look into the mind of that person and feel like you know them better if you are a friend, this is all done even if the artstyles are low quality or ugly; AI will never replicate this until it becomes a true AGI that can be said to be a free agent with its own experiences and thoughts

Isnt it obvious that non artists dont really know what makes a pic good other then their fetishes and poses and wont see tons of problems with the pics they generate?

like things fusing into each other or random strokes of paint or something. and ai drawn muscles or armpits are usually weird looking too.

The story was perfectly serviceable.
The issue with SMT V and, really, every major release nowadays is that a hype train of hate is much more satisfying than a hype train of "love". People wanted to play SMT V because it's a relevant game. A lot of people knew about it, playing it means being part of the zeitgeist, whether you want to have fun or not. Up until Persona 5, Atlus games were niche enough to not really attract widespread attention. Persona 5 changed that by giving the studio massive public awareness, which did a disservice to SMT V as it had a lower player count than Persona 5 yet was received worse, since people just played it because Persona 5 was popular and not because they had any interest in the setting or themes. Add that SMT is mostly know because of stupid Nocturne memes and the very poor HD release of Nocturne itself, which associated Atlus and SMT with drama. Articles and videos about Nocturne HD had a lot of clicks and views despite relatively few people playing it on Steam, because that's what people really love: drama.

SMT V suffers the same issues as other entries do, exacerbated after Persona 5 and Nocturne HD. People just want to play it to be part of the latest online drama, not because they want anything else out of the game or are interested in the game itself.
You will get what you want out of SMT V. If you want to have a bad time, you will have a terrible time.

It's carried entirely by it's setting and press turn. Once you're overly familiar with both, you'll realize that there's better things to be gotten from this franchise.

That's not a really good example of bad balancing in IV. It's very clear that whoever gets the first turn wins the fight and that's purely rng. Lots of low hp magic and healing demons die with one simple attack as well.
That's more them rethinking instadeath attacks and how it's not good to have bosses null attacks and alignments for no real reason. Which then lead to how they did it in IV:A.

IV is probably the most "your choices actually matter" game in the series as there are several whole different outcomes and branches in the story, the issue is again how they handle the point system

You don't really need to. Without buffing they go down in 4 hits but with some dead demons on your side (sometimes), so it's just to avoid headache
All this and I like IV. The gameplay isn't good but it doesn't ruin the game for me. Nevertheless the tempo of battles are so fucked and a massive step down from nocturne. Smirk only makes it worse.

I did that and ended up thinking it was even worse than I'd gathered from just the second hand opinions I'd heard here. There were issues people here didn't even bring up like the complete lack of gameplay stakes because of the free of charge pokemon center you just have in your base and the piss poor demon amount making the fusion pool garbage. Its kinda funny, I've definitely finished worse games but I just couldn't bring myself to finish SH2, it was so piss poor.

Pretty much any pre IV game honestly.
Off the top of my head the only other game that had an all times accessible free of charge healing thing was raidou 2 at the detective agency. DDS had a couple of those healing energy spouts but they were usually in places you were locked in for story reasons like marible 2 and the abandoned ship.
Saving anywhere, free healing and no resource cost return to save point shit just kinda feels like giving up in terms of game design imo. I know there's reasons for the save anywhere decision in IV because of "dude its on the 3ds people are playing it in short bursts on the bus" mentality every 3ds developer had but I still think it negatively impacted the game
Much better if stuff like that is tied to tangible resources.

I know you mean in terms of balance here, but I find it makes for a less memorable game too. When your save point, heal point and shop are separate physical locations, it makes the towns they're in more memorable (partly out of necessity, partly because they're more well thought out on the designer's part).

the point is that the game is not made easier because you can heal for free since the only difficulty in smt games is having the proper team to tackle a boss and the fun comes from the fact that you put the team together, it is not a war of attrition on resources, those games were never very popular and it makes sense why

Took me way too long too realise there were literally no justice arcana enemy demons in this game.
Only realised now when I got everyones ultimate material cards and I was combing through every section of the bomb shelter to find a justice demon to get justice cards so I could get katsuyas ultimate.
Had to use blank cards to turn into justice cards instead, which seems really weird to have to do for just a random party member. I could understand having to do something for your protag or even tatsuya but it just seems like a bit of an oversight to have to do for your not all that special dude in your party.
