I think if we really really wanted to trim down Adventure's cast, I think the ones that are essential and you can't remove in any way shape or form are Taichi (leader), Koushiro (2nd in command and exposition dump), Takeru (essential in defeating Devimon and also Digimon death drama) and finally Hikari (focus point of Vandemon's arc), everyone else can have their roles repurposed by someone here or be side characters. Rename their crests to Heart, Mind, Soul and Life or something like that. It even fits with 02 since the ones who join the team are Takari and the ones of the older group who help the most are Taishiro.

Although not Champions, there is ChibiKamemon (although does it count? I don't think it's even an official variant...) as an aquatic Digimon for Jou, and although not a plant, Monimon looks like a plant, like a mechanical version of Tanemon, easily could evolve into a proper plant Digimon (also it's a ninja, which the Digimental of Purity is themed after for some reason so...).

I feel like some digital fields are too broad, Nature Spirits, Deep Savers and Wind Guardians have extremely large spectrums inside them it's kinda absurd.

Are Next Order fights supposed to be cheeses with EXE evolution? Feels like cheating, but then again, the enemy is also cheating by randomly having much higher stats than my mons to the point I do like 10~100 damage to them.
Story was going smoothly with my Megas in the 2500-3000 stat range, I comfortably beat Datamon.. And the next boss, Titamon, I couldn't even scratch.
So far above I saw like zero damage to his lifebar.
So I do EXE expecting an epic battle of equals, but now my Omegamon Zwart just fodderized him like he's a Goburimon. Zero balance, like the anime I guess but that's not good.

Regardless, even doing this the game will catch up to you. You beat a boss and progress the story but now I can't win against random enemies in new maps, I'm forced to train stronger mons.

Once you have access to late game areas it's not too difficult to get a child level to 9999 in everything

I recently got back into Digimon and I'm loving it :) I was a Pokémon kid and played all the games and watched most of the anime, but also played Digimon World when it came out (my uncle gave me his modchipped PSX and my dad brought a pirated copy of the game from Italy because he worked there for a few months) and watched up to Tamers on TV, but didn't watch all of it. I think I stopped following Digimon because World was hard as a kid that didn't speak English and I didn't really like the fusions (matrix evolution) in Tamers and then Frontier (spirit evolution).
Started watching from the beginning, watched Adventure, 02, Tamers, Tri, Kizuna, specials and movies. Currently on episode 35 of Frontier. Spirit evolution is fine, but still not really my thing, but the story is good so far.
Also got my childhood 1999 orange digivice back from my mom's place and bought a vpet Xa last week and might get the black 20th when the price drops or try to get a Revival in November when I go to Japan. My friend I've known for 18 years and always been more into Digimon got a Xa too because of me, except I got the black and he got the white, so we'll battle to unlock area SP.
Been listening to the soundtracks at work, mainly best collection up to Frontier, Tri and Kizuna.
Also downloaded Next Order and Cybersleuth the other day, but will go back to the old ones too.
All in all having fun. I don't watch any news and stopped consuming new media for the most part, so that's what's made me go back to watching stuff I watched as a kid but never completed. I'd say it's much better looking and also just overall compared to most new stuff.

I like its Tentomon-like head fused with Gigeresque jaws. The blank bug eyes make it different enough from the standard "markings-for-eyes" insect Digimon designs.

Kinda sad we don't have proper elemental categories, I thought with Frontier and the 10 elemental warriors we would get something like that, but when it's used it's not all the 10 elements but like, 6 or 8 of them.
But guess they didn't want to have even more accusations of copying Pokemon (even though elements being tied to specific creatures wasn't something they invented).
Although I guess the fields mostly match the elements so it's not all bad:

that's actually part of the problem, it's thematic focus is super narrow(things that kill Virus Digimon) but yeah it's actual pool of Digimon who belong to it is too broad, particularly since it often double dips from other Fields, hence why I feel getting rid of it entirely is the right move to make, particularly if we then fold most of the Angel and other holy types into Wind Guardians which would boost that field's diversity(as Jungle Troopers took a lot of its original conceptual space)

A frightful-looking Mutant Digimon entirely clad in leather. Dijangmon does not speak, nor does it do anything else to try and communicate. It is usually found standing still in unsettling silence. it's weird how comparatively coherent Digital Monster Version 1 is* and then Versions 2, 3, and 4 are all incredibly messy(Version 4 being the worst about it arguably), not quite as surprising with Version 5 being super coherent since the sprites are borrowed/modified from that Godzilla V-Pet and even the proper finalized versions of all the V5 Digimon(aside from maybe Flymon) all feel rather coherent as a group

*dinosaur and frog/lizard thing then evolve into either a bigger dinosaur(Greymon & Tyrannomon), a monstrous humanoid(Devimon & Meramon), or a serpent(SeaDramon or AirDramon), or a shit flinging slug if you did poorly enough(Numemon), and then from there either a weird mutant cyborg thing(Mamemon), a cyborg dinosaur(MetalGreymon), or the shit flinging slug shoves itself into a giant teddy bear and becomes strong through newfound self confidence(Monzaemon)

Now I see, NOW I FINALLY SEE why this game felt so off to me. It had nothing to do with gameplay, it's because they fucking removed all the most common / emblematic World 1 mons which also doubled as Initial Adventuremons.
Seriously? No Andromon, Whamon, Unimon, Centarumon, Frigimon, Shellmon... It's like they fucking skipped File Island which was the first game and anime season, this is so stupid. But yeah since I wasn't seeing any Kunemons or Betamons I couldn't feel "at home" with this game, it's missing all the ps1 creatures.
A lot of the missing ones were also common on DW3.

It kinda puts one off when you want to commit to raising a monster but realize that at the end of a day they're just interchangeable skins.
It also clashes with the Anime where the digimon are characters with set lines instead of just puppets that change form haphazardly.

Shellmon is the enemy Greymon fights at first in Adventure, he deserves it more than Parrotmon.
Anyway you should get my point, iconic or not, they fucking screwed over the start of the franchise by ditching most of the File Island / PS1 creatures.
It really doesn't feel very nostalgic when it's missing all of those mooks that added flavor, it's like a Pokémon game without the caterpie, pidgey, rattatas, etc..
Next Order is pretty much a World remake / sequel (Jijimon, machinedramon, mameo...) but it didn't bother feeling nostalgic with the roster selection.
Right now I arrived to absolute zero, an ice area with a cathedral. The game is clearly trying to be related to World 1 so I'd expect more effort.
But I'm mostly fucking angry about the lack of Andromon, from there I realized all the other missing ones but GODDAMMIT you make a game about Machinedramon and fail to include the first Perfect Digimon shown in the anime, Andromon, the prototype to the perfect machine?

This, I hate how /digi/ is filled with purists, it's not unlike /vp/ eating the shit Gamefreak produces and gladly defending it.
I dislike that feel of the evos just being cosmetic, interchangeable skins, and honestly we'd get better games if Bandai ditched the idea and each obtainable rookie had its own set path that made sense.
Make fewer mons, but make them more useful in all content / give unique animations / maybe entirely change the genre and make it an action game.

How cool it'd be if once a World fight starts, you took control of your Digimon in real time with combos, dashes, and special moves

And evo trees already have some sense behind them, so for example robotic-rookie evolves into four different robotic champions and then each of them also evolves into 2-3 possible megas but based more on what that robotic champion was etc. As long as it has loose thematic connections it is perfectly fine.

to be fair as random as that one seems on the surface it does have a consistent thematic connection between all of the forms having ranged weapons and also one I just realized that there's also a technological progression(slingshot to musket to machine guns to beam cannons), and really that highlights Digimon at its best, when something seems random at first but then makes perfect sense once you think about it(or at least some manner of logic can be eked out)

except of course "Trash" evolutions, those can be as silly or nonsensical as they want

Ok imagine this.. Monster Hunter but it's Digimon. Evolutions would be like switching weapon / playstyles, more so than a power upgrade. WereGarurumon would obviously play different than Metal, as one is hand-to-hand with combos while Metal favors ranged.
Actually next order does separate mons like this, which results in annoyingly losing skills when you evolve because now your Mega can't use Upgrade so perhaps your Perfect was better

that's actually something we're in agreement on, Digimon should generally have multiple paths to evolve down and while the whole path might seem messy you should be able to at least see the logic from say Child to Adult or Adult to Perfect on some level or another(like say yes Koemon could continue down Monkey path by going Gorimon or Hanumon or he could branch off in other directions by going Grottomon, Igamon, Hookmon, Revolmon, Tankmon, or Tuchidarumon and then go off in further directions from each of those)

I watched Adventure about 3 weeks ago and saw no scene exactly like that. He seems to be falling from a cliff or something and Tentomon doesn't even have the worried drops, he's just standing there. The Digivice color also indicates he's about to evolve to AtlurKabuterimon, which reduces the ammount of scenes by at least half and makes it easier to remember if it actually happened.

I found it pretty meh, they put a filter on top that made the whole thing a bit blurry. We get a new form for Greymon and Garurumon in the end. The story ties in with the main one though, it's a battle between humanoid and beast digimon.

Vikemon makes sense as a progression from Gomamon > Ikkakumon > Zudomon with each evolution going further along the mammal/cold climate theme

Plesiomon works as a Gomamon evolution in the same way that Gabumon is a Dinosaur wearing a fur coat who turns into a bunch of different Wolves.
Evolutions don't have to make sense as they progress, just look at all the people who seethe over Tailmon > Angewomon > Holydramon

I like Vikemon because I don't think that tri or Colon would have done well with Plesiomon after how poorly they did Hououmon, they seem to have problems with animating these giant kaiju Digimon as partners

MetalGarurumon should have been a Perfect stage, since like his dinosaur counterpart, it's just the Adult Digimon covered in metallic stuff.

Holy crap this game is amazing so far. That’s one hell of a way to make a prologue. If not for the digimon having cute designs and knowing the terminology, this could have passed for a horror game

I honestly think Mimi is a better character and I am not even that into her.
Saki lacks character development/arc aside from one/single/uno dialogue choice in truth route where she prefer facing reality than running away like all of her other prior choices. Her ebin self-sacrifice in wrath is just the same thing she did for Miu in pre-timeskip and rooted on her self-hate/illness thing so I am not even sure if it’s supposed to be admirable.
Funny I prefer her over Miu in pre-timeskip but post-time skip Miu dabbed on her hard as she actually had character development and arc. Even in harmony’s short time she managed to exposed how Kaito’s overprotectiveness is more about his guilt/ego than actually about her.
