To be fair, we don't really know if he's incapable of it.
It doesn't take THAT much for him to grow fond of someone, just them understanding him.
Andrew is patholocially afraid of opening up about any of his problems and doesn't think anyone would accept him, Ashley is theo only one perceptive enough to see through it and it endeared him to her.
Had anyone else been able to do the same, I believe he would've come to care about them too.

We did see he felt sorry about killing Nina, and that he felt pity for Julia.
He used to care about Renee and Doug too but grew to resent them.
I think it's more that he made his entire identity, life's purpose, to be Ashley's protector and be there for her, and due to Ashley's own trauma, it warped into having to kill more and more people, and he gradually went insane, until he started to pull back from it in Decay.

He doesn't want people to understand or like him. Ashley just does. He's not going to open up to people and anyone would have to be on Ashley's level and sit around him long enough to come to an understanding like her, which whittles down the eligibility pool to basically nothing because Ashley is mostly a product of circumstance.

Well, yeah and that's kind of my point.
It's not inherent to him, he became this way due to Renee shutting him down, and due to Doug not connecting with him.
He became pathologically afraid of oepning up about any of his problems to anyone, he doesn't feel ike anyone would accept him, his obsession to be normal is wanting to be a blank slate, someone with no problems, a superficiality.

Andrew clearly loves Ashley romantically and it isn't just an obsession. He was easy to raise because he was smart and quiet, not because he was born a psychopath. Andrew and Ashley care about each other more than they do themselves which a psychopath would never do

I don't claim Andrew and Ashley aren't evil, they're sympathetic villains in the same way Renee+Douglas are, but even being "forced" to sell she still fundamentally failed to even TRY protecting her children that she barely tolerated and didn't bother raising.
