Renee, like Andrew, is such a bullshitter, I could honestly believe she's merely feigning concern for her kids because even in this scenario that's "expected" of her. Actually, if you pay attention in the scene, Renee did want to fight for her children, it wasn't until Doug convinced her to back off that she does, and then she flips to blame them for their predicament.

I think, to Andrew, being normal kinda means being without problems.
In flashbacks, he's shown consistently to prefer to avoid subjects where he could admit to things that aren't really that bad(like his parents being unable to afford cards, fake apologize to the hag), he wanted to sneakily wash Ashley off without anyone seeing she got muddied, despite there arguably being a better way to do it.
Andrew is just pathologically unable to really open up about anything that bothers him, mostly because when he tried it with Renee, she's shut him down.
I think this is also why he both hates and loves Ashley:
Like with everyone else, he'd rather not open up to her about things that really bother him(at least beyond the extent that he finds comfortable discussing with her), but she's perceptive enough to know.
She's able to tell these things without him having to pull these admissions out of himself.
On the one hand, it's something he appreciates about Ashley a great deal because to him it shows she cares, and he doesn't have to grapple with himself.
But on the other, it also means that it's borderline impossible to hide issues from Ashley, and she just can't accept the idea of her not sharing his burdens with him, because to her, that's kind of what love is, as she's always kinda imagined them being married, and she wants to make him happy.

Paradoxically, being normal, means being without problems, without Leyley, without his feelings for Ashley.
But Ashley is his everything, so without his problems, he's nothing.
(pic related), when he lived with Julia, when he hasn't spoken to Ashley for a year, he's got the experience of what it means to live in his definition of normal:
He doesn't just look depressed, he's completely empty inside, he can't even bear to look at himself because there's nothing there anymore.
Andrew taking up LU's offer would turn him into an empty shell, an Andy who would do anything for his new parent, and I think this is why LU is intrigued by him.

Doug's inability to connect with Andrew made Andrew despise him, and project most of his own insecurities onto him, even though they're untrue.
He sees doug as a spineless follower, even though we see that him and Renee have an equal partnership, and he has just as much of a say in the matters as Renee does(in fact, selling out kids was ultimately his suggestion, not Rene's), but Andrew can't see Doug for who he and ses himself in him, despite showing more affection to him than Renee.
