I played around with some of the skills but everything feels like im moving in slow mo. My friend is playing a monk and attacks so much faster than i do. His leaping slam attack also doesnt take an eternity to execute and has a bigger aoe component compared to mine

I mean casters are probably better at end game. The early game for them is a slog right now though, going ranger basically assures you'll have a decent time at worse for the entire game

Why are so many mechanics in this game designed around fucking with player visibility so it can get a cheap shot at you? How is this a good game design?

If you're in ssf, then you're meant to grind way more. Pick a recent checkpoint and keep clearing mobs around it and respawning from checkpoint once clear for an hour. You'll get a lot of rare drops. Some may be upgrades. The rest you disenchant and you'll have plenty of regals. Plus now you'll be overpowered for the campaign.
One good place to do this early on is the checkpoint beside ritual in act 1 hunting grounds. Any checkpoint where mobs spawn right by it works well for this.
