That said, sometimes, an identity doesn't really matter (or rather, it shouldn't matter), but it tends to still matter regardless, because that's just how people are wired.
Making the registration process simple would be nice. Perhaps put some checks in to make sure if someone really wants to tie an online account to their real life name and some additional things to prevent identity theft.
Putting an identity on someone when they're not actively putting it out there by recording search queries is pretty bad practice though. Those things should just be anonymized regardless.
