In fact, it's part of how they were able to take so much land with little fighting despite being farmers. Dingane had signed over huge swaths of land to the Boer in return for recovering stolen cattle from some other tribe, but it's believed he couldn't properly read the contract, nor understand the alien concept of permanent land ownership. This is what led to the events at Blood River itself.
