You actually had to employ strategy with weapons in MH.

If you're using short swords, or any other weak weapon you would NEVER be allowed to attack the body or the outer shell because you'd do no damage, you're forced to attack the legs and chest.

And if you were a hammer and axe wielder your main priority was to always aim for the face for maximum damage.
And even THEN, different enemies had different damage modifiers parts.
So you'd literally have to study up on them or get your ass kicked.
