I mean actually checking out the author and all of their works for every show before I pick it up. After all this time watching anime I'm not really familiar with the individual creators or even seiyuus as much as I'd want.
Of course I do that when reading manga but that's a much more direct step like checking out what other shows a studio has done. Which at this point I'm fairly familiar with most major studios' body of work.
And hopefully you are doing the DLC as well. It's superb.
