You can argue that dogs are loyal and even protective, which definitely serves a purpose. But can you trust them to run a power plant? Can they do anything except for eat and look confused so they're entertaining to humans. If animals like chimps ruled the earth we would have literally zero progress and would just die out to a meteor.
