Yeah, I've done that, too. Hell, I know it's a lot of work, but at least announce that you're giving it up and give someone else your progress. A lot of them just stall the shit with no updates.
Kana's one thing I pretty much picked up through seeing it all the time, but that kanji is insanity. I'd end up forgetting it all the more I tried to learn. As much as I should learn Japanese, I just really don't have the motivation. To be honest, at this point, I'd rather learn some code. Seems to have more of a practical use, at least to me. I'll never in my life get a job relating to that sort of thing, but it's still pretty fun, especially when you can mess with things. Now I just need to get started on that, as well...
