Except it's all segmented into branch-style areas that have nothing to do with each other and mostly aren't connected. If you try to go to a branch before selecting the mission corresponding to that branch, you can't do anything. So the mission select is like level select, except you have to physically walk all the way over to the level. And furthermore, you don't know where the area is until you find it, because it's not indicated on the map. If you find an area and it's the wrong area, you have to walk all the way back because you're not on the right mission
