Well, they're certificate "authorities". Anyone can generate and use an SSL certificate, but an authority can sign and say this certificate is legit. If a certificate isn't legit, your browser will pop up a big red screen saying the certificate isn't valid or that your secure session isn't safe and asks if you want to continue. Rather annoying way to block self-signed certificates.
